Rathjen Vineyard

Ian and Lynn’s vineyard is situated just north of the township of Colbinabbin, faces east, and grows in Cambrian period soils dating back some 500 million years. The Mataro plantings are an exciting joint venture between Ian and Liam, the fruits of which we are just coming to understand now. The Mataro vines were planted in 2015 and took 6 years to get to a level where the wine was exceptional enough to make a single vineyard wine. Yields are naturally very low, berries small, and flavours are intense. The wine is fermented in a small stainless steel open fermenter and basket pressed into second use French oak hogsheads and barriques, where it rests for 16 months prior to bottling.
