The Farmers Picnic Vineyard was named after an event that took place on the exact parcel of land the vineyard is now planted. A gathering of hundreds of people from all over Central Victoria in the 19th century (1870’s to 1890’s). This gathering was called the Farmers Picnic. People would arrive by horse and cart (some travelling well over 100 kilometres), compete in events and donate money toward the local hospital. This block of land faces north-east, and the soils are the richly fertile Cambrian period soils. The wine made from this vineyard is rich and vibrant. Often up to 30% whole bunches are used in the fermentation process. The wine is then matured in second use French oak hogsheads for 22 months prior to bottling. The Shiraz that comes from the Farmers Picnic Vineyard has a cellaring potential of 20+ years.
